Are you looking for simple and short trekking in the mountainous country of Nepal? Then Mardi Himal trekking is undoubtedly made for you that is short and easy notable for its picturesque views of the Annapurna Ridge. Alternately known as Mardi Himal Base Camp Trekking, this trek will take you to the maximum elevation of 4550 m at the Mardi Himal Base Camp and you will spend the night at the maximum elevation of 3620 m at High Camp.
It is regarded as the best alternative to the Annapurna Base Camp trek or the Annapurna circuit trek. Why you ask? Because the Mardi Himal trek is the only trek that will take you to the maximum proximity to the unconquered sacred mountain of the Himalayas – Machapuchare (or Fishtail, 6993 m high). The local population believes the mountain is the holy abode of Lord Shiva and therefore the Government has not permitted its ascension.
Apart from the sacred mountain, the other jewels of this trek are the Mardi Himal itself at 5587 m altitude, Annapurna I at 8091m, Annapurna South at 7219 m, Baraha Shikhar at 7647 m, Hiunchuli at 6441 m, Sing Chuli at 6501 m, and Tent Peak at 5695 m.
Recently opened in 2012, the Mardi Himal trek is a relatively new, hidden, and still little-visited gem located to the East of the Annapurna massif. The route to the Mardi Himal trek does not run through a valley but rather along an elevated ridge with spectacular views at all times. The trek will lead you through an environment that is much wilder, more rustic, and more authentic. Due to its easiness, this trek is suitable for all people accustomed to moving through the mountains.
Diversity is another benefit of this trek. The lower and the initial part of the trail will take you through the rice terraces while the later part will lead you through the virgin forests and alpine meadows.
There is a lot of opportunity to spot rich wildlife, birds of different species, monkeys, and other animals. Therefore, this trek is also the perfect tour for those interested in bird watching, wildlife spotting, and photography. Due to its tranquility and solitude, this trek is also a perfect opportunity for deep meditation.
We therefore invite you to be a part of this unique journey in 2024 and 2025. Come and travel with us to the pristine Nepal you have never seen before.
Our program begins with a drive to Pokhara and Dhampus from Kathmandu. We then start our walk towards Deurali from where we move on to cross the four camps: Forest Camp, Low Camp, High Camp, and Mardi Himal Base Camp.
After exploring the base camp, we will take a different path to return to Kathmandu. We will trek to Jhinu Danda and Ghandruk Phedi from where we will drive back to Pokhara and then to Kathmandu.
Welcome to the capital of one of the highest mountainous countries in the world, Nepal. Our representative will meet and greet you and drive you to your hotel.
After some time, we will organize a briefing on the upcoming departure on the route. Then you can walk along the Kathmandu streets or go see the illumination of the Boudhanath stupa at night.
You can also enjoy your dinner in the lively corner of Boudhanath or Thamel.
Early in the morning after breakfast, we will depart for Pokhara by tourist bus. The trip takes around 7 to 8 hours depending on the traffic and weather. Along the route, enjoy the scenic views of Nepal villages, and people getting on their daily routines.
As we approach Pokhara, the mountains of Fishtail and Annapurna give you a glimpse from a distance. After arriving in the city, we will have time to know this warm southern city and stroll along the embankment of Lake Phewa.
After breakfast, we will ride on a private jeep to reach Dhampus. In about an hour, we will be at Dhampus, from here our hike commences. We will walk along the stone steps a little up and a little down. On the way, we will stop at Australian Camp at 2000 m for lunch. From this small settlement, you can enjoy the wonderful panorama of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu.
Resuming our hike for about 3 hours, we will reach the Pothana village and in about an hour, we will arrive at our overnight village of Deurali. From here, in clear weather, from the local observation deck, we will have beautiful views of Annapurna South, Mardi Himal, Machapuchhare, Tukuche Peak, Dhampus Peak, Nilgiri, and Himchuli.
Today, we will overcome a steep climb as we make our way toward Forest Camp- the first camp of the four camps. We will walk through the dense forest of rhododendrons. Shortly stone steps will appear that will lead you to a little temple from where you can admire the Ghandruk village and Dhaulagiri Himal.
Continuing our hiking for another hour, we will finally arrive at Forest Camp. Nothing will block the view of Annapurna South on the left, Annapurna II on the right, Machapuchare ahead, and the Himalayan foothills dissolving into infinity behind us.
We have a long journey ahead of us today so we will wake up early in the morning and have our breakfast. Then we climb uphill through a beautiful forest of pine, conifer, and rhododendron. We will then cross a section of the ridge and reach the Low Camp at 2990 m. here we will stop for lunch and explore the area for a while.
We will then climb for another two hours to reach Badal Danda at 3250 m. Notice the change in landscape as the tree line gives way to patches of bushes. We will climb for a few more hours to reach the High Camp where you can relax and enjoy views of the majestic surrounding topography. In the evening enjoy the view of the sunset and the snow-white peaks changing into a variety of colors.
We will wake up probably around 4 am and begin our climb to the highest point of our trek, Mardi Himal Base Camp. Following the narrow path across the ridge, we will climb with the views of snow-capped mountains on both sides.
As we go on gaining altitude, the route gradually turns flat as we near the base camp. Get ready to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over Mardi Himal (5587 m), Annapurna I (8091 m), Annapurna South (7219 m), Hiunchuli (6441 m), Baraha Shikhar (Mount Fang) (7647 m), Tent Peak (5695 m), Singu Chuli (6501 m), Machhapuchhre (6993 m) and other endless peaks in panoramic perspective.
Also, witness the various river networks and endless views of the region’s central hills. After enjoying the view, we will retrace our steps back towards Low Camp via High Camp.
Our meeting with the sacred Himalayas is ending, but today another interesting day awaits us. We drop the altitude and follow a path through a picturesque wild forest to the village of Siding. Here we will have our lunch and take some time to get acquainted with the life of the local residents and feel the spirit of Nepalese mountain villages.
Next, we enter a fabulous Mardi River valley with numerous suspension bridges with waterfalls. It is an alternate route away from the popular paths so it is less crowded. After about 4 hours through dense forest, we reach the Jhinu Danda- a village of natural mineral hot springs where we can relax and swim.
This day will be sad and joyful at the same time – we say goodbye to the Himalayas and return to civilization. A short 3 to 4-hour trek along the Modi River will take us to Ghandruk Phedi from where we will take a jeep to drive to Pokhara via Nayapul.
The tourist capital is different from the capital- more natural and more welcoming. After some rest, we can stroll along the Lakeside for a sunset view. We can also take a boat ride on the Phewa Lake and go up to the Stupa of Peace, and end the evening in a nice restaurant overlooking the lake.
After breakfast, we will leave the beautiful paradise of Pokhara and return to Kathmandu on a comfortable tourist bus. In Kathmandu, there may be some time left for us to walk, visit nearby shrines, and buy some souvenirs.
In the evening, we will invite you to a nice farewell dinner in one of the charming local restaurants with traditional dance and cultural shows.
After breakfast, our agent will take you to the TIA approximately three hours before your scheduled flight. We hope you have a delightful journey in Nepal. Till your next Nepal trip, adeus and see you soon.
September, October, November, March, April, and May are the best months for the Mardi Himal trekking. The trip is known for its beautiful mountainous views and varied landscape. You definitely don’t want to miss out on the best nature Nepal has to offer. So choose to trek in the autumn months of September, October, and November as the weather is clear providing incredible visibility over endless mountains. The lush green forests with warm temperatures and clear nights offer a great opportunity for stargazing.
Spring in March, April, and May is also the best time for this trek as the ending winter brings changes to the region, with a variety of colorful blooming trees, tall green grasslands mild temperatures, and sunny weather. In this season you will see flocks of sheep and yaks grazing on the green plateau.
The rainy season in June, July, and August is unfavorable as the weather becomes bad and it is difficult to travel across the country, with frequent rainstorms and landslides. In the winter months of December, January, and February, the Annapurna Region receives heavy snowfall which covers most of the trails and makes trekking quite impossible for this reason.
In our 10-day Mardi Himal trekking, expect the dazzling panorama of snow-capped peaks including Fishtail, Annapurna South, Mardi Himal, and Hiunchuli. You will walk through diverse landscapes ranging from lush rhododendron forests to alpine meadows and high-altitude landscapes. The beauty of the natural surroundings is captivating throughout the trip.

You may encounter wildlife such as Himalayan Thar, deer, several species of birds, and possibly even the elusive snow leopard. When at the base camp, you can enjoy close-up views of the towering peaks and glaciers. The serene atmosphere at the base camp is really rewarding after trekking.
Above all, being less crowded, you will have a more peaceful and remote experience amidst nature all along the trail.
The majestic Mardi Himal stands tall at an impressive elevation of 5587 m above sea level. However, the Mardi Himal trekking is basically a trek to the Mardi Himal Base Camp which is nestled 182 km away from Nepal’s capital Kathmandu. However, as we begin our journey and drive to Pokhara, we will be 31 km closer to the unique base camp of Mardi Himal.
The highest of this trekking is the base camp itself elevated at 4550 m above sea level. However, we will be spending the night at the maximum elevation of 3620 m at High Camp.
We will complete this trek at a moderate pace spending a week to ten days covering an average of 10 to 12 kilometers per day.
During the incredible 10-day Mardi Himal trek, we will walk for approximately 5 to 6 hours per day. This gradual walk will help our bodies to well adapt to the growing altitude comfortably. Unlike the Annapurna Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit Trek, our Mardi Himal trek presents less difficult terrain with pretty straightforward paths.
The easiest and shortest walking day will be on day 8 when we will only need to walk for 3 hours from Jhinu Danda to Ghandruk Phedi. While on day 6, we will walk for 7 to 8 hours when trekking from High Camp to Mardi Himal Base Camp before returning to Low Camp. This day is the toughest and longest trekking day of our entire Mardi Himal trek.
Our 10-day Mardi Himal trek is a moderately challenging journey classified between grades one and two. This trek will lead you to the highest elevation of 4550 m at the Base Camp. In addition, with each progressing day, your overnight stay will gain altitude gradually. This will ensure your proper acclimatization before reaching altitudes exceeding 4,000 meters.
We intend to keep you safe and ensure your safety. Therefore, our highly experienced mountain guide will accompany you throughout the trek to guide you through the safest and most scenic routes.
Additionally, this is a complete lodge trekking with accommodation in comfortable hotels equipped with basic amenities. There is no prior requirement for a high-altitude trek or utilization of any specialized mountaineering or hiking equipment along the route.
The Mardi Himal trek in the Annapurna National Park is an excellent opportunity for beginners, senior citizens, and children in good health to participate in a relatively easy adventure in Nepal. This trek doesn’t need any past trekking or climbing experience, or any skill of using any specialized equipment.
In addition, we will retire every night in a comfortable lodge in the charming village along the route. Plus, we will slowly walk at a gentle pace increasing altitude gradually each day. As the culmination of our journey approaches, we will reach an elevation of above 4000 m at the base camp of Mardi Himal.
Reaching the base camp includes crossing some steep sections which you can easily overcome with secure footing and careful attention. Whatever the difficulty the trek poses, it will be compensated with the breathtaking vistas of the wonderful Himalayas of Fishtail, Annapurna, Hiunchuli, Mardi Himal, and many more.
Mardi Himal trekking is an easy trek favorable for any individual who lives an active lifestyle. Still, you are embarking on a journey that will take you to an altitude of more than 4000 m. You will be traversing some Nepalese terrain that consists of periodic ascending and descending. So train yourself at least two months before your departure date so your body will be prepared for the high-altitude trek.
Ideally, you can start running at least 10 to 15 km a day without breaks with a heart rate of 120-140 beats/min. You can also do some pull-ups that will help you lift your backpacks.
You can also practice some squats at home with your own weight or with dumbbells. Or, engaging in rock climbing will also aid in developing your muscle endurance. 2 workouts a week for 2-3 hours will be enough.
Cycling, swimming, push-ups, and walking are also some other best workouts that give an excellent load on the necessary muscle groups.
Mardi Himal trekking offers us the opportunity to merge different other destinations along the journey. For example, you can undertake the Annapurna Base Camp trek along with a trip to Mardi Himal Base Camp. On the way back from the Mardi Himal Base Camp, you can trek from Jhinu Danda to Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp.
Or, for a shorter and more comfortable trip, you can incorporate the Chitwan National Park tour. On the way back, you can drive to Chitwan National Park from Pokhara and spend two or three more days here.
Experiencing altitude sickness in the Mardi Himal trek is pretty nil but again this sickness is something that cannot be predicted and totally depends on individual endurance, training, and fitness level. Feeling discomforts such as headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, swelling, and exhaustion may begin to appear as you cross the altitude of 3000 m.
Based on our program, we will be above 3000 m altitude from day 5 when we will reach High Camp. If you feel these discomforts, it is better that you go down till you feel normal again.
However, gaining altitude is imperative on any Nepal trek. The trick is to climb slowly to acclimatize, stay very hydrated ( basic rule: drink before you are thirsty ) and get enough rest. Ibuprofen or Daimox can relieve some of the symptoms and it is also recommended to drink masala tea or Tibetan tea with salt.
We offer all ground transportation in private vehicles according to our program. We will receive you at the airport and take you to the hotel in a private car, van, or bus depending on the group size. We will provide the same service when you say goodbye and return to your home.
At the start of the trip, you will ride on a comfortable tourist bus to reach Pokhara from Kathmandu. Then a private jeep will take you to Dhampus from where you will begin your trek.
On the way back, you will again take a private jeep to drive to Pokhara from Ghandrul Phedi and return via the tourist bus to Kathmandu.
