Regarded as a symbol of peace, globally, Lumbini Tour has been the most significant pilgrimage site since the Buddha’s era. It serves as both the hub of the Buddhist pilgrimage and a site of devotion for all those who seek eternal peace on Earth. Due to its exceptional global importance and its reputation as the birthplace of Lord Buddha, it has gained worldwide recognition and has been listed as a World Heritage Site since 1997.
For Buddhists, this is the primary site of pilgrimage linked to the life of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Over two hundred historical, archeological, and pilgrimage sites related to the life of Buddha are part of the Lumbini Tour. All in all, Lumbini is a Buddhist pilgrimage destination that has drawn tourists since ancient times.
Of the hundreds of sites, the Maya Devi temple is regarded as the central component of Lumbini’s complex. The cultural area of Lumbini houses the Lumbini Museum, the Lumbini International Research Institute complex, and the Theater, also referred to as the Peace Hall where you can watch documentaries about Buddha.
Pilgrims and tourists from all cultures come to Lumbini to convey, in various ways, their spiritual and mystical views. Lumini is among the greatest destinations on Earth for contemplation, mystical travel, reverence, praying, and acquiring wisdom and understanding.
Pilgrimage tourism is a significant subset of tourism that involves traveling to holy locations like churches, mosques, monasteries, and temples in order to engage in a joyful and holy experience. Officially, Nepal used to be a Vedic nation, where Buddhism and Hinduism lived together for millennia and governed people’s lives. Nepal’s well-known historical sites and sacred locations make it a popular pilgrimage destination as well.
This Lumbini Tour will take you to the holy land of Lumbini and give you a full tour of the sacred site, paired with a guide. You will get to see all the significant sites of Lumbini and more. Here’s our detailed Lumbini Tour package.
As you land at the international airport in Kathmandu, it will be the first day of your Lumbini Tour. You will be directed to the immigration counter and have to complete the tourist visa procedure there before being permitted to exit the airport premises. Before traveling to Kathmandu, you can choose to fill out the visa application online form or simply fill out the written form once you arrive at the airport.
If your upcoming Lumbini Tour to Nepal falls during the popular travel period of spring or autumn. The best course of action is to fill out a visa application form on the Internet, which will allow you to make the payment for the visa quickly rather than spending time lining up for the application.
After completing all the required steps, one of our agents will be waiting to greet you outside the baggage claim area. After exchanging greetings, he will show you to the accommodation where you will spend the two nights in total. On the way to your accommodation, you can ask our rep about the Lumbini Tour package or about Nepal in general and he will answer you to the best of his abilities.
If you arrive early in the morning or in the afternoon, you can spend a couple of hours visiting the local attractions. However, we will take you on a sightseeing tour as a part of the Lumbini Tour package after we return from Lumbini. To kill time while you are in Kathmandu, we recommend you visit different restaurants and try Nepalese dishes, shop for souvenirs, and other light activities.
On the 2nd day of the Lumbini Tour, we will travel to Bhairahawa, the gateway to Lumbini, to ultimately see Lord Gautam Buddha’s birthplace. The flight itself is appealing and lasts between thirty and forty-five minutes. When we get to Bhairahawa, we settle into our accommodation and have a little break before carrying on with the Lumbini Tour. Your accommodation will be covered by the Lumbini Tour package along with 3 meals per day.
We will not be traveling to Lumbini today, rather we will be exploring the local attractions of Bhairahawa and having the local cuisines. You should try a sweet they locally produce called “Peda”. It is made from milk and has a creamy/grainy texture.
We have a big day tomorrow, so it’s recommended that you get adequate rest by sleeping early.
The Lumbini Tour package takes you to a bunch of sites that fall within the Lumbini heritage tour. Any Lumbini Tour is not complete if you miss any of these sites. Additionally, our Lumbini Tour package will take you to a couple more sites that are not very popular but are important.
Starting off the Lumbini heritage site tour, we will first visit the Maya Devi Temple. Renowned as the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, Maya Devi Temple serves as one of the most prominent Buddhist temples in Nepal, and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is among the oldest Buddhist temples in the world.
The temple, which is located in the center of the Lumbini Development Zone park, is a must-see sight given its religious and historical significance. So, naturally, we had it included in our Lumbini Tour package.
The Pushkarini pond and the holy garden sit close to the Maya Devi Temple. The archeological remnants of this site, which dates to the Ashoka era, or roughly the third century BCE, reveal the location where Maya Devi delivered her only son, Gautam Buddha. According to legend, Gautam Buddha was born around 563 BC.
A Japanese architect named Kenzo Tange created the temple’s concept in 1978. It includes several monasteries and beautiful ponds, each designed by a different architect from around the globe. Luckily, the 2015 earthquake that struck Nepal had no effect on any of the sites or temples.
Maya Devi Temple’s origin dates back to 2013. At that time, a few remains from the sixth century BC were discovered by a multinational group of archaeologists. It was the remnants of a prehistoric, 550 BC tree temple. The location represents the oldest evidence of both Gautam Buddha and Buddhism.
Two archaeologists of Nepalese and British nationality carried out the research. The two made the claim—which was widely reported by the world press—that the shrine represented the oldest evidence of Buddhism. Some archaeologists, nonetheless, disagreed, claiming that the tree was proof of pre-Buddhist activities.
After we exit the Maya Devi temple, we will visit the Maya Devi pond. Maya Devi Pond, which is square in shape and has steps surrounding it leading down to the water’s surface, is situated just in front of the Maya Devi Temple.
Maya Devi, the mother of Gautama Buddha, washed herself here. This location is also referred to as Puskarini. Indeed, it was within this pond that Lord Buddha took his very first bath. During important events, brass oil diyas are lit after sunset on the stairs surrounding the pond to honor the holy location.
There are old remains from the third century B.C. on the pond and a well-maintained lawn with big trees and blooming plants. It is thought that these remnants are a remnant of historic temples that were covered with brick structures.
The Ashok Pillar, constructed by Emperor Ashoka as a tribute to Gautama Buddha’s path to nirvana and his words of wisdom, is another notable landmark in this area. As a result, the pond has immense historical significance in addition to religious significance.
Next, we will visit the Bodhi Tree. Close to the altar on the banks of the lovely Maya Devi Pond, the Bodhi Tree in Lumbini is situated inside the grounds of the Maya Devi Temple site. Buddhist monks frequently chant spiritual scriptures while meditating beneath the tree. Wrapped with vibrant prayer flags, the tree is an ancient Peepal tree. The locals hold the belief that wishes expressed while tying a prayer flag are usually fulfilled.
This tree is important to the Buddhist religion because it is believed that Buddha acquired enlightenment and freedom from fantasies, frustration, and luxuries at the Bodhi Tree at Bodh Gaya.
The tree is sometimes used to symbolize the Buddha’s complete life path, including his throne resignation, simple life, attainment of enlightenment, and teachings on his findings up to his passing. Thus, in the religion of Buddhism, the Bodhi Tree is seen to hold immense significance.
During the time of Emperor Ashoka, several stone pillars were constructed, including the Ashoka Pillar located near Lumbini. Ashoka built it as a symbol of admiration following his visit to the birthplace of Lord Buddha and his decision to adopt Buddhism. Because of these specifics, the pillar is one of the nation’s most popular tourist destinations.
Among all the Ashoka Pillars, it has the earliest inscription, indicating that it was actually the first one to be constructed. The pillar is an interesting site to see due to its rich and inspirational history. It is situated inside the tranquil Maya Devi Temple complex. In 1896, archaeologists from Nepal unearthed this 6-meter-tall pink sandstone tower.
The Lumbini Museum, housed within the Sacred Garden Area UNESCO World Heritage Site, has around 12,000 objects on display, featuring religious writings, iron figurines, and hundreds of years old coins. Infrastructure and resources for the research of Buddhism and theology in general are provided at the Lumbini International Research Institute (LIRI), which is situated across from the Lumbini Museum. Taiwanese architect Kris Yao and his crew have completely renovated this 1970s-era museum.
Prince Siddhartha (Gautam Buddha before nirvana) was brought up in the old town of Kapilavastu from the time of his birth till he reached the age of 29. The prince was given a luxurious life in the heart of the former Sakya Kingdom, one that he would eventually reject in order to embark on the path of spirituality.
Prince Siddhartha set out on his journey to become the Buddha at the age of 29, entering Kapilavastu via the eastern entrance. You can still stand in this precise location today and gaze across the gate upon the grassy pastures that formerly hosted the opening steps of Buddha’s spiritual journey.
Much of the old capital’s ruins, which are located in present-day Tilaurakot, have recently been unearthed and rebuilt, and archeological work is currently ongoing to find further remnants of the city and information about the daily activities of Siddhartha Gautama.
There used to be a lot of beautiful structures here since it was an important commercial center from around the ninth century BC to the third century AD. Researchers have already discovered roads, pools, shrines, and royal residences. At the neighboring Kapilavastu Museum, a few artifacts discovered during the investigation are on exhibit.
Hinduism also holds a significant place in Tilaurakot. Inside the old walls is a primitive, contemporary Hindu temple where worshippers frequently congregate to pay homage to the goddess Samai Mai.
We can see the size of the settlement where Buddha was raised as you stroll around Tilaurakot. It’s easy to see how, in his youth, he might have been drawn to something more profound than what was contained inside Kapilavastu’s boundaries.
After a long day of exploration, we will head back to our accommodation to have a restful night as we have more travel and sightseeing tomorrow.
On the 5th day of the Lumbini Tour, we will travel back to Kathmandu after having our breakfast. We will reach Kathmandu in the early afternoon and shortly begin our sightseeing. Firstly, we will visit Swoyambhunath.
Aside from the main highlight of Lumbini, this Lumbini Tour package takes you to Swoyambhunaht. Located in the northwestern part of the Kathmandu Valley, this stupa occupies the summit of a hill. There are several 2000-year-old Buddhist stupas in this location. It is therefore widely recognized, particularly by the pilgrims and Buddhists in general.
However, because the shrine of Haratimata is located nearby, Hindus are also drawn to the Swayambhunath Stupa. Known by many as the goddess of children, this deity is revered as a Hindu divinity. The majority of Hindu parents who bring kids along visit the temple to worship every Saturday in gratitude for her protection of their young ones.
Referring to Swayambhunath Stupa’s structural design, the ground of the monument has prayer wheels all around it. The biggest Shakyamuni Buddha picture is situated on the platform on the structure’s western side.
From the foot to the summit of the hill, there are more sculptures, Chaityas, Buddhist shrines, and a few Hindu temples. There’s also a tiny pond. Water streams out of the center of it, and there’s a little hole where money used to be thrown by visitors. It is said that someone is blessed if the coins fall into the hole.
There are two entrance points leading up to the Swayambhunath Stupa’s hilltop. A road encircling the hill is your first option, and the stairs are the second. With 365 steps winding through a lovely jungle, this staircase is far too lengthy for most people.
Additionally, the summit of this location is regarded as an excellent spot for taking in the picturesque scenes of the valley of Kathmandu. It is an environment where a desire for peace and tranquility can blossom. In addition, this location represents Kathmandu’s greatest pride.
The majority of tourists consider Kathmandu Durbar Square to be one of the busiest and most popular locations. It is among the Kathmandu Valley’s precious assets. Up until the nineteenth century, when the Nepalese king was crowned, this was the home of the Royal Nepalese monarchs. It was enlisted in the UNESCO World Heritage sight back in 1979.
It is located close to Thamel, a popular tourist destination, in the center of Kathmandu. It has been surrounded by impressive crafts and structures for a number of generations, earning it its nickname of “living museum of temples.” The majority of the structures, temples, artwork, and sculptures are from the 15th to the 18th century. Thus, thousands of tourists visit Nepal each year in order to witness these monuments.
A large statue of Hanuman, a disciple of Lord Ram, is located at the entrance to Kathmandu Durbar Square. Consequently, Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square is yet another nickname given to it.
The main tourist attraction of Kathmandu Durbar Square is Kumari Ghar, wherein a living goddess resides. Thus, it goes under the name “House of Living Goddess.” In Nepal, she is considered holy by both Buddhists and Hindus. She is thought to be the goddess Durga’s manifestation.
The large bell, the museum, Taleju Temple, Mahadev Temple, Kaal Bhairav, Kastamandap, Shiva Parbati Temple, and other attractions are among the numerous fascinating aspects of this royal locale. Unfortunately, the 2015 earthquake destroyed most of the structures. While some were undergoing renovations for years, others had previously undergone renovations. So, a few of the locations are closed to tourists.
The historic palace locale, which is separated into many courtyards including Basantapur Durbar, Mul Chowk, and Nakxal Chowk, as well as other exquisite artwork and temples, is located within the inner region of Kathmandu Durbar Square.
Additionally, the Lumbini Tour package takes you to Boudhanath Stupa, which is, without a doubt, among the top attractions in Kathmandu. The 2015 earthquake completely destroyed the historic Bouddhanath Stupa. Now that the renovations are finished, this new building is regarded as one of Nepal’s biggest Buddhist stupas.
The northeast edge of the valley of Kathmandu is home to the Bouddhanath Stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are Tibetan communities all around it. The Thanka production is another reason for the site’s popularity.
The circular shape of the Bouddhanath Stupa makes it appear incredibly magnificent. Additionally, the location is seen as the hub of Tibetan culture in Kathmandu. The majority of Buddhist tourists, particularly those from Tibet and China, are accustomed to lodging at the hotel next to this pagoda and partaking in meditation.
On the banks of the Bagmati River in the eastern section of Kathmandu is the Holy Temple, Pashupatinath. It is Nepal’s greatest Hindu temple. The primary deity of this temple is Lord Shiva. In Hinduism, he is sometimes referred to as the deity of destruction. He is a deity with immense power.
In terms of the Pashupatinath Temple’s exterior appearance, it is a pagoda-style building with four silver entrances, a golden rooftop, and woodwork engravings. The sculpture made of stone is amazing. This temple is accompanied by 452 temples, 12 jyotirlinga shrines, and roughly 15 temples known as Shivalaya, dedicated to Hindu god Shiva and a few Buddhist idols.
This Pashupatinath region also has the Guheswori Temple. It serves as the companion of Lord Shiva’s shrine. It is also considered to be the Shakti Peeth. Unfortunately, this temple is off-limits to outside visitors.
Within the Pashupatinath region, there is also a place for cremations. The platform is situated directly above the Bagmati River’s shore. According to Hinduism, this body of water is sacred as a bunch of ritualistic activities take place there.
In 1979, the Pashupatinath Temple was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Only Hindus are allowed to visit the Pashupatinath temple area through the front gate; everyone else must enter through the back door and observe the sacred structures from a distance.
Among the top attractions in Kathmandu, the Royal Museum is also known as Narayanhiti Palace Museum. It is commonly known that Narayanhiti Palace was formerly home to the Nepalese Royal family members. Following its opening on February 26, 2009, the Narayanhiti Palace Museum is accessible to every visitor, including visitors from overseas.

With that being said, the best time to visit the Lumbini region is during the months of Autumn when the weather conditions are suitable for traveling. If you can not make it to Lumbini in autumn, you can book our Lumbini Tour package in spring, as it offers similar traveling conditions.
