Gokyo Lake and Spring Waters near the Trek

Gokyo Lake Trek is one of the famous trekking routes in the Everest region, but what brings more beauty to this trek is the various lakes formed by the high-altitude glaciers of the mountains. This trek also provides excellent views of the Himalayas: Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu. It is a quieter and less crowded trek, with gorgeous panoramic mountain views and alpine lakes. There are six major lakes to visit during the Gokyo Trek. Thonak Cho Lake is the biggest of the six principal lakes in the Gokyo Lakes system of Sagarmatha National Park in Nepal. These lakes, ranging in altitude from 4,700 to 5,000 meters (15,420 and 16,404 feet above sea level), are also near important pilgrimage sites for both Buddhists and Hindus. The people from the community travel there to bathe in the holy waters of the lakes during the festival of Janai Purnima. During the full moon in August, it is believed that bathing in the sacred waters will make your sins go.

Most of the lakes are fed by glacial meltwater from the Ngozumpa Glacier (the longest glacier in Nepal and among the longest in the Himalayas). The lakes are known for their brilliant turquoise waters, the color of which differs with the weather and seasons.

Thonak Cho Lake

Thonak Cho Lake is one of those popular glacier lakes of the Valley and is situated at around 4,700 m (15,400 ft) above sea level. The Lake Set in Khumbu Valley, Thonak Cho is a well-known place because of magnificent views of the Himalayas. It is one of the heights among the glacier lakes found in the Gokyo Trek. The lake is also well known for collecting some of the most beautiful blue lakes. Clustering around these lakes, including Thonak Cho, are the high peaks like Cho Oyu and the Dudh Kosi River.

Gokyo Cho Lake

In Nepal’s Gokyo region, located in Khumbu Valley, Gokyo Cho Lake or Gokyo Lake stands as one of the major glacial lakes. It is found at an approximate height of 4,790 meters (15,715 feet) and remains just one of numerous turquoise lakes, which form the famous Gokyo Valley. Below the majestic Himalayan peaks such as Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, and Makalu lies the famous Gokyo Lakes.

Gokyo Cho Lake is one of the most prominent spots along the Gokyo Lakes trek, a popular alternative to the Everest Base Camp trek. It belongs to the glorious chain of lakes of the region, well acclaimed for its incredible blue waters. 

For trekkers roaming in the Gokyo area, Gyazumpa Cho is yet another unnaturally remote and quiet location. It is much less traveled than the more frequently visited Gokyo Lakes. A secluded place for those people who like the serene beauty of the general area away from the main hiking routes, it is located next to the more popular Gokyo Lakes. Surrounding the majestic Himalayan peaks, Gyazumpa Cho adds to that breathtaking view that makes Gokyo such a place for high-altitude trekking.

Ngojumba Cho Lake

Ngojumba Cho Lake is one of these glacial lakes, found in the Khumbu Valley of the Gokyo region of Nepal. At a comparatively lower elevation of about 4,800 meters (15,748 feet), it is part of the Ngozumpa Glacier, which is the longest glacier in the Himalayas. Much of what draws tourists to this lake is its beautiful turquoise color and the wonderful mountain view surrounding it, including Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, and many others.

Ngojumba Cho Lake is one of the most beautiful but least traveled destinations within the Gokyo Lakes region. For trekkers and adventurers, there is the opportunity to enjoy peace and beauty in nature at a high altitude. It usually forms part of the itinerary of individuals going to the famous viewpoint of Gokyo Ri, which provides panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The lake-scenic addition makes Gokyo Lakes a popular alternative for the Everest Base Camp trek.

Tanjung Cho Lake

Tanjung Cho, the mysterious unexploited lake of the Gokyo region in Nepal, is the “Fifth Lake of Gokyo.” Gokyo has an altitude of almost 4700m (15420ft), from where one can have a spectacular view of Mount Everest and Cho Oyu, two of the highest peaks in the world. The lake forms part of the Gokyo Lakes system, famous for its turquoise waters reflecting the mighty Himalayas. It is known to be visited by trekkers or adventurers who often spend their time at Tanjung Cho to enjoy the quiet beauty and the peace of almost undisturbed paths. 

Taboche Tsho Lake

Taboche Tsho Lake is one of the Glacial Lakes of the Khumbu Valley in Gokyo, Nepal. One of the several beautiful turquoise lakes is located next to the Ngozumpa Glacier at about an elevation of 4,600m (15,091ft). It has been named after Taboche Peak, one of the most famous mountains in the region.

Taboche Tsho remains peculiarly quiet and pristine when compared to the giant Gokyo Lakes, though it enhances the features of this region by adding to the beauty of its landscapes. It offers a quiet and very beautiful surrounding to the hiker which is close to the towering heights of Mount Everest and Cho Oyu, and quiet goes to the more serene and quieter view of the Himalayas and normally is visited by trekkers going to the Gokyo Ri viewpoint or by those interested in other less frequented parts of the Gokyo Lakes journey.
